Lead Climbing (Trad)

Lead Trad Climbing should be an immensely rewarding and immersive experience, though be aware that it can become completely addictive!

Efficient and safe technique combines movement on rock, technical skills around ropework and gear, sound judgement and decision making to ascend rock using leader placed protection.

Training and coaching is available in all aspects, whether you are a new/prospective lead climber, want to progress to the next level or brush up on your technique.

You will get the most from this course if you are already a competent second (used to belaying and following a lead climber, removing gear) or are leading trad climbs already.

To maximise learning and progression, ratios are kept low with 1 instructor to 2 clients being ideal.

This is a very practical course which will flex to meet your lead climbing development needs in a progressive, safe and structured way, typically covering the following areas:

  • Movement and climbing technique
  • Gear choice, placement and evaluation
  • Belay building and belaying
  • Ropework
  • Route selection and reading
  • As much climbing as possible!

The delivery will focus on safe and repeatable principles; the goal is to build/enhance a toolkit of skills, techniques and tactics to support your trad climbing journey.

This two day course will run on single pitch crags at venues which maximises learning opportunities and are most appropriate for the clients, forecast and prevailing weather conditions.

Each day will be entirely crag based, meeting 09:30 and typically finishing 16:00 each day.

All technical equipment will be provided but please advise on the booking form if you require climbing helmet or shoes. If you have your own gear then feel free to bring it along.

Please refer to the FAQs for other information and guidance.

For 2025 this course can be arranged between April and October.

£250 per person for 1:2 ratio, £150 per person for 1:4 ratio (max).
